Re: Need tech help with audio file replacement |
most times you won't be able go to item manager because your item is 'checked out'. you may try to check it back in and then go to item manager. to check in, use
http://archive.org/checkin/[YOUR ITEM IDENTIFIER]
i can't say about the second case. if you give a link to the item that gives you that error, it would be easier.

Re: Need tech help with audio file replacement |
thanks for the help. Here is the other link that gives me the "page cannot be found" error.
ftp://ia311212.us.archive.org/St.AnnsReelThis happens quite a lot with other files as well.

Re: Need tech help with audio file replacement |
this link has an important part missing - your login e-mail after "
ftp://" (you should replace "@" symbol with "AT" and put "@" after your e-mail).

Re: Need tech help with audio file replacement |
Thanks for the help again. It seems that everything that you are saying should happen, and it gives me the correct infomation when I attempt to replace the files, but comes up as "page cannot be found. Te problem might be due to my ancient machine (or my techno ignorance) I shall keep at it. At any rate, I have opted to replace the files and information since I have re-mixed the original files for clarity and improved sound quality. This is not a difficult task, as they are small files and I have learned more about my audio recording program so I will make better recordings. I have also learned that I should make absolutly sure as to the final quality of the file that I am going to archive. There will be double files for any recordings prior to December 1st, 2008, but the new improved files are clearly marked in the description as to which are the re-mixes and a notice has been issued to the effect. Now it would seem that I should like to delete the inferior files somehow, as I have also placed duplicates by my error. Do you know how I could go about this procedure?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Need tech help with audio file replacement |
typically you post a delete request here in the forums, with the list of items you want to get rid of. if you want to keep only one last item with all your recordings together, i guess you can skip the whole list and just ask for deletion of everything except that item.

Re: Need tech help with audio file replacement |
I've been dealing with this problem for years. I tried the 'checkin' url and it does the same thing it often does, where it just keeps repeating the message "not ready yet wait 10 seconds" for HOURS without result. It seems like that when the metadata file gets corrupted, you're lost, and there's nothing you can do but start over.
I love archive.org, and that they offer such a great service, and that when I use their interface I feel like it's 1993 again! I have broadband, but I get to relive what it's like to have a 14.4 modem again! This great resource is really worth all of the hours of waiting, waiting waiting, and frustration with not being able to do simple things like overwrite files, and the hours of time expended trying to figure how to produce a decent product are well spent.
Anyway, I'm curious if there is a way to upload multiple files and maintain them with corrections and updates, in a way that doesn't make me want to check into a mental institution?
How can I "fix or rebuild" metadata files as it so quaintly says I must do?
